Facet joint injections are a minimally invasive procedure that are intended to reduce swelling and inflammation of the nerves around your face joints. Facet joints connect the vertebrae to your spine. When you feel pain in these joints, medial branch nerves will transmit pain signals from your facet joints to your brain. Pain can be felt in your upper back, shoulders, or hips.
This straightforward procedure is relatively simple and includes a corticosteroid and a local anesthetic for pain relief. As always because of Pain Stop Avondale policies, we would perform this injection using fluoroscopy or x-ray to ensure safety and also guide our physicians to the exact target of placement for your injection. The targeted area will be well cleansed, treated with a numbing medicine, and then a small needle will be inserted.
Once it’s confirmed that the medication has been contained inside the joint, a local anesthetic will then also be released slowly into the joint for further pain relief. This process takes approximately 5 minutes, and then we will have a patient rest for approximately 30 minutes before asking them to perform certain movements that would usually provoke pain. If all checks out, a patient will be allowed to go home.
Pain relief can last for weeks or years depending on whether the joints targeted were the main source of pain. If you would like to learn more about facet joint injections and if it’s the right treatment for you, book a consultation with us today!
